  • When Love Comes For You, You Can Never Run Away From It

I love telling my parents love story so I'm going to share it. It's going to be sloppy and half assed because I don't want to write a damn book.

My parents were rivals in high school. Dad was as my mom puts it 'a weed smoking womanizer' while my mom was a goody-goody academic scholar. She claims she hated him so much and he claims she was obsessed with him. She was the only one who never fell for his charm (ugh) and he made it his life's mission to woo her. She told him that she would only go out on a date with him if he got higher grades than her. She said it as a joke, he took it as a challenge. He got his shit together. Stopped hanging out with bad crowd and even got on the honor roll. When he asked her out on a date again, she told him she still had higher grades than him and he said the line that they both still remember fondly and my Dad boasts about, "I don't want to be better than you, I just want to be good enough for you". She then went on a date with him because who fucking wouldn't with that line really, but unbeknownst to her, he was taking him to their house, a small and shabby house in a squatters area, to meet his parents. My grandma then asked if, "So this is her?", meaning 'the one'. Apparently, my grandma had one rule in the house. Only bring a girl home if you're going to marry her. When they got together, all of their teachers were so disappointed and kept telling my Mom he was trouble. They eventually broke up because her parents were against it (because he was poor and my grandma is a nasty woman) and became engaged to someone else in her 20s while he went on to become a truck driver and a part time security guard in another part of the country. When she got invited to my Dad's brother's wedding, who had the same name as him, she went because she thought HE was the one getting married and felt nostalgic. Long story short, old flames ignited and he basically stole her and had her family threatening to kill him. When they made her choose, she chose him and was legit disowned by her family until she got pregnant with my older brother. They still have the same dysfunctional, passionate, and intense relationship that borderlines on destructive because they sometimes hate each other but can't live without the other. They're happy together and miserable apart. I can't count how many times they've fought and Mom threatened annulment but it never happens. They fight hard and love harder. They're the reason I believe that when love comes for you, you can never run away from it. You can fight it but you won't win. They're also the reason why I'm never going to marry or have children. I don't know the first thing about a healthy relationship let alone a functioning one.
